Drum is one of the basic units of conveying machine; therefore, there are special requirements to its quality.
It is made from a tube or metal sheet.
Usually, conveyors have cylindrical shape, though they can also be barrel-shaped.
Drum mechanism features a steel tube (sometimes cast-iron pipe) of cylindrical or barrel shape. Covers with the hubs are welded in the butt end of the tube. That is where the drum shaft with bearing units is fixed.
Drum liner increases its pulling force. Rubber and polymeric plates are used as drum liners. Heavy-duty conveyors require installation of liners with longitudinal or kid leather ribs (grooves, notches with the depth of 3-4 mm). Their primary function is to remove moisture and dirt. Drums without rubber cover have small friction coefficient that leads to considerable increase of conveyor belt tension. Therefore, use of unlined drums (drums without rubber cover) is considered ineffective.
Types of available drums:
1. Drive drum.
Drive drum is a constituent part of a belt-type conveyor. It is designed to transfer pulling force necessary for actuation of a conveyor belt. A drum is rotated with the help of motor driven reduction gear or geared motor. Drive drums are available both with smooth finish and with rubber cover. Drive drums can be manufactured with two shaft brackets for connection with drive mechanisms located symmetrically to conveyor axis.
2. Tension drum.
It is installed on horizontal and inclined conveyors. Tension device, and more specifically – tension drum, can be of screw type, cargo hoist type, cargo spring type. The frame of such a drum is installed on a return run in the center of conveyor or directly on conveyor head. The length of conveyor defines the type of tension drum unit. The choice of the unit size is defined by the load, belt width and conveyor length.
3. By-pass drum.
It is designed to reverse belt movement, to set the belt from inclined to horizontal position, or to establish a smaller incline.
By-pass drum is installed in places of belt bending. It can be of any diameter and length. Moreover, the drum can have shaft outreach of the required length (it depends on the loading of the by-pass drum).
