Glandless pumps are used for pumping of poisonous, toxic, highly volatile, explosive and flammable substances, which may cause an emergency, environmental disaster and risks to staff health in case of a leak. Glandless diaphragm metering pumps are used for injection of metered amounts of reagents into the process equipment at nuclear enterprises.
Main design feature of the glandless pumps is a completely leak-tight body, no shaft seal and no risk of leakage of pumped substance. There are several ways to create such a design, one of which is to make pump and engine as a single unit with pump shaft separated from motor stator by a thin-walled shell, and the other way is to connect pump with a motor with the help of magnetic coupling.
Flow part of the glandless pumps is usually made from high-alloy and corrosion-resistant steels, but it can be also made from medium-alloy steel with lining from a polymeric material.
Pumps can also have modular design, design with heating or cooling jacket.
Glandless pumps are equipped with explosion-proof motors. Type and class of protection are defined by operating conditions and pump installation site (category of the premise, class of the mixture).
Types of available pumps:
1. Glandless centrifugal pumps.
They are designed for pumping of fluids with a density of not more than 1.35 g/sm3 and a temperature from -40⁰С to +100 ⁰С, vapors and gases of which can form explosive mixtures with the air that belong to categories IIA and IIB, groups T1, Т2, Т3, Т4 according to the state standard GOST 12.1.011-78.
Solid inclusions in a pumped fluid in amount of 0.2% by weight with particle size of not more than 0.2 mm are permissible. Pumped fluid should not cause corrosion of the material of the flow part – corrosion-resistant chrome-nickel-alloy steel 12Х18Н9Т.
Glandless centrifugal pump can come with a motor installed on the frame as a pumping unit.
2. Glandless pumps.
They are designed for pumping of various toxic, explosive and neutral to carbon steel liquids, including various types of mineral fuels and liquefied gases with kinematic viscosity up to 10-5 m2/s (40cSt), temperature from -40⁰C to 100 ⁰C, and a density of 1600 kg/m3, in standard conditions. Electric driven pumps, which pump fluids with a density up to 700 kg/m3, have letter "L" added to their reference codes.
3. Glandless pumps driven by motors (BEN type).
The need to create special glandless pumps driven by motors (BEN type) is caused by the fact that Q-H field of glandless centrifugal pumps does not meet the needs of petroleum refineries and petrochemical plants in terms of pump delivery rate and, especially, pump head.
They have monoblock design (pumping unit is combined with induction motor).
The pumps are used in chemical, gas, oil, fuel and energy industries, pharmaceutical, petrochemical, food, dairy and meat industries, refrigeration and processing industries, etc.
Leak-free pumps, which do not require the presence of the maintenance staff, can be used when working with highly toxic, poisonous, chemically active liquids and liquefied gases. Use of such pumps ensures safety during technological processes and prevents any leakages. Pumped liquid lubricates and cools the pumps.
4. Glandless centrifugal pumps with magnetic coupling.
Such pumps are used in circulation and pressure systems of chemical facilities, oil and gas processing plants, food, refrigeration, energy industries, and wastewater treatment plants for pumping of environmentally hazardous and corrosive liquids. A pump transfers acids (except for concentrated acids), alkalis, hydrocarbons, toxic and explosive liquids, liquefied substances and other clean and low-purity substances (up to 0.5% by the weight of solid abrasive inclusions) with a density from 0.6 to 1.8 g/cm3, viscosity from 0.5 to 15 cSt. It is available in two versions – for operating temperatures from -50⁰С to +120⁰С and for temperatures up to +250⁰С.
5. Glandless centrifugal chemical pumps.
These pumps are used in various industries. They are designed for pumping aggressive and neutral fluids with a density up to 1400 kg/m3 and a kinematic viscosity up to 30х10-6m2/s, with particles content of not more than 1.25 mg/cm3, at a temperature from 0 to 80⁰С.
Pumps transfer such substances as tap water, distilled water, deionized water, aqueous solutions of commercial detergents (pH less than 12), solutions based on fluorocarbons, alkaline solutions – with concentration not exceeding 30%. In addition, they transfer solutions of acids: nitric acid – with concentration not exceeding 40%; sulfuric acid – with concentration not exceeding 70%, phosphoric acid – with concentration not exceeding 90%; hydrochloric acid – with concentration not exceeding 35%.
Pumps of this type are centrifugal, glandless, with magnetic coupling, which eliminates leakages of pumped fluids. The components of the flow part of the pump are made from polypropylene, fluoropolymers and ceramics, which ensures high resistance to corrosive substances.
6. Glandless pumping units (GDM type).
They are designed for pumping neutral, corrosive, flammable and combustible fluids (depending on a design).
Design of the pumping units:
A number of GDM pumping units provides pumping of fluids with an output from 4 to 500 m3/h and a pressure from 40 to 850 m at a synchronous speed of the pump shaft equal to 1500 rpm or 3000 rpm.
GDM units are effectively used at the enterprises involved in processing and extraction of oil and gas, in food, refrigeration and chemical industries, at filling stations.
